Trustees and other relevant stakeholders will have an annual review meeting with your dedicated wealth manager to discuss financial and impact performance, strategic alignment, compliance and outlook.

How do you manage exposure to controversial activities?

We actively exclude investing in business activities that don’t support – or directly work against – the delivery of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). If a company’s activities conflict with these goals, it won’t be included in our portfolios.

We apply ethical screens with transparency and rigour, embedding them into our quarterly monitoring process. Recognising that data alone doesn’t always tell the full story, we combine manual reviews with data-led insights, particularly in high-risk sectors or regions where information may be limited or unreliable.

Ethical screens: what are they and how do we use them?

Does Tribe work with faith-based organisations?

As a trustee, is there any Charity Commission guidance available to me on impact investing?

The Charity Commission for England and Wales released an updated investment guidance in 2023. In it, they welcome modernised thinking from the Butler-Sloss judgement, which we wrote about here. However, the investment guidance doesn’t include specific impact investing guidelines. If you want to know more about how to integrate impact into your investment strategy, we offer a consulting and advisory service and can help you navigate your options while staying up to date with regulation and new opportunities.

How does Tribe work with DAF providers?

For charities looking to align their reserves, legacies or designated funds with their mission, we work closely with donor-advised fund (DAF) providers to ensure philanthropic capital is managed with purpose and integrity.

Our role is to help build and manage portfolios that support and deepen the DAF’s philanthropic objectives. By investing this capital for positive social and environmental outcomes, we help sustain and enhance future grant making.

Strong governance, transparent audit trails and robust investment stewardship underpin our approach, giving trustees confidence that the charity’s capital is being managed in a way that is consistent with its values, reputation and long-term impact goals.

How is Tribe different from other investment managers?

How does Tribe support trustees?

We can support trustees in many ways and cater to where you and your trustees are in your impact investing journey. We can provide as much or as little education and engagement as needed on impact investing.

We use our proprietary ImpactDNA^TM tool to help ensure a charity’s portfolio is aligned with their values. This can be done with all trustees separately or together as group. The outcome is a portfolio that furthers your theory of change. Once invested, we provide regular investment and impact reporting which can be shared with stakeholders and beneficiaries. We produce clear, jargon-free insights, offer educational sessions and provide reporting that supports informed decision-making. Many of our charitable clients have formed networks to share their experiences of their impact investing journey.

How do you manage risk in my portfolio?

From the beginning, your portfolio will be aligned to your organisation’s unique risk appetite. Tribe portfolios are well diversified across a range of asset classes, sectors and geographies, which can help to mitigate market volatility and therefore some risks. We also have an expert impact investment team who actively manage and monitor portfolios. It is an important part of our impact investment process.

We believe there’s an additional layer of risk management in impact investing, in that the companies we invest in are uniquely positioned to address environmental and/or social changes whether they be from incoming regulation or changing consumer preferences.
