Meet Max Parylo

What led you to work in sustainable finance?
My fascination with the natural world, alongside my admiration for successful entrepreneurs, led me to question how business and shareholder interests can be aligned with the best outcomes for society and the environment.
I recently revisited my first university personal statement, written in 2017, and I think it reinforced why I now work in sustainable finance well. It read, “I want to be able to contribute towards devising solutions that work cooperatively with companies rather than against them.”
Why Tribe?
Following on from my previous answer, Tribe struck a deep personal chord with me. It’s a business that’s completely committed to marrying the interests of businesses with the interests of society and our planet. It is honestly a privilege to work somewhere that aligns so deeply with my personal values.
What’s your most memorable work milestone?
I had the opportunity to help improve how we analyse the data from our ImpactDNA process, which was incredibly memorable because I got to see trends around what our clients value most over time.
What did you want to be growing up?
A professional karate athlete or an architect.
What’s your earliest memory?
Walking through London in the snow with my grandma and naming different car models.
If you had to pick, which of the 17 SDGs means the most to you and why?
SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. I think this SDG fundamentally underpins a host of others. My love for nature would initially lead me to say Life on Land (SDG 15) or Life Below Water (SDG 14), but SDG 12 helps to support both.
If you could have dinner with two people, who would they be? What would you discuss/ask them?
- Leonardo Davinci: I’m fascinated by the pursuit of polymathy. I would question him on how one comes to operate at such a high level across many different domains.
- An employee at one of my favourite places, Wingstop. I’d ask how they get the perfect combination of crunch and juiciness in each crispy chicken tender.
If you weren’t an operations analyst at Tribe, what would you be?
- Option 1: A mechanic; I’ve already planned that my “mid-life crisis” is going to be building a car from scratch, or buying one and giving it a new lease of life.
- Option 2: Guard dog trainer
What have you read, listened to, or watched recently that you’ve enjoyed?
- Listened: Pressure by Paramore
- Read: (1) Is Maths Real by Eugenia Cheng – This book helps you question mathematical facts and understand how they came to be. I’ll probably have to read it a couple of times for it to fully sink in.
(2) A sign at one of the exhibits in the Natural History Museum on “Paleobotany” which is the study of fossilised plants. I hadn’t been back to the Natural History Museum since I was a child – the T Rex seems a lot smaller now… - Watched: The Great Gatsby at the theatre. The set changes were unbelievable. I would highly recommend a visit.
Give us an exclusive, what’s something no one knows about you?
When I was younger, I used to take part in my local church’s pantomime…

What’s something you’ve always wanted to do but never have?
To complete the Mongol Rally.
