If we covered 1.2% of the Sahara Desert with solar panels, it would provide all of the energy needs of the world today. The Sahara Desert in Africa is 3.6 million square miles – as a country, it would be the fifth largest in the world. It is prime for solar power as it has more than 12 hours sunlight per day and has the advantage of being close to Europe.
